Code with us!

09/30/23 Class

This class was supposed to focus on Micro-Bits, however, they did not arrive on time. Instead, we focused on team work and talking through problems. We did two activities that were related to coding and the coders had to work through these problems. The first activity was where we made the coders pair off by using a random name generator and one of them was the coder and the other one was a robot. Both of them had to come up with a code to get from one side of the room to the other. Then, the coder had to read out their code and the robot had to follow their instructions with their eyes closed. They ran into multiple problems and had to troubleshoot their way through them and it took multiple trials. This activity was to teach them that their computer is like a baby and that you need to be very specific while coding. The second activity we did was where we gave them a square sheet of paper and made them fold them into a fish without instructions. We gave them about five minutes to do this. Then, we made them reflect on the process and gave them the instructions on how to fold the piece of paper into a fish. Afterwards, they reflected on the process and answered questions like “Which way was easier?” and “Why was it easier”. This was to teach them that there is no right way in coding but their is a easier way. Overall, the coders learned these concepts very well and they had fun. We look forward to next class!
